The gameplay is good, since mutants have semi-random dispersal and can move, stay, or jump as needed.

I found out quickly enough that the player does not have such flexibility. Upon finding an ideal spot for defense, the player quickly becomes asploded if he stays in one place for too long. No warning, just...boom. Game over.

So, the game favors reflexes over intelligence. Shoot, but more importantly RUN to save your life.
